Cheese Flavor: Does it have a real, recognizable cheese taste, or is it artificial-tasting?
Seasoning: Does it have the right salt-to-sweet balance? Or is it over-salted or too sweet?
Spreadability & creaminess: Does it glide on effortlessly? What's the character of the spread’s creaminess—rich and velvety, light and airy, or dense and thick? Any grainy, oily, or waxy off-notes?
Versatility: Does it work equally well between bread, on crackers, and as a dip, or is it better suited to one use case?
Fine Print
The Lineup: We tested 9 cheese spreads from major supermarkets and groceries in Metro Manila. We focused on widely available and jarred, shelf-stable options. We skipped refrigerated cheese spreads, which belong in a different category in terms of format and price.
Why We're Doing This: For a lot of Pinoy households, cheese spread means one thing: Cheez Whiz, grabbed off the shelf without a second thought. It's baon nostalgia in a jar, the palaman we grew up with, the one that shows up in merienda tables across generations. We wanted to see what other options exist beyond the one jar we default to, how cheese shows up differently across brands, and whether the classic still holds its ground against the competition.
How We Tasted: Each brand was sampled on its own, then spread on bread and crackers.
Blind Taste Test: All brands were removed from their packaging, transferred to identical containers, labeled with numbers, and tasted blind to prevent brand bias.
How We Scored: Each brand was evaluated across 4 criteria. Final placements reflect the Pepper team's averaged impressions.
Transparency: No brand paid for inclusion in this taste test. Arla and CDO are past advertising partners of Pepper.
