Basil Flavor: Is basil the dominant flavor, or is it overwhelmed by garlic, cheese, or other add-ins? Does it taste bright and herbaceous, or dull and muted?
Saltiness & Seasoning: Is it well-seasoned on its own, ready to use straight from the jar, or does it taste flat or bland, needing adjustment?
Texture & Body: Is it scoopable and spreadable? Does it feel like pesto should—chunky and paste-like? Is it oily or watery?
Use Case: Is it versatile? Does it work as a pasta sauce on its own? Could you see yourself using it as a spread, dip, or marinade?
Fine Print
The Lineup: We tested 11 basil pesto sauces available in Philippine supermarkets, from supermarket house brands to imported Italian names. We focused on widely available, ready-to-use jars and packs since these are what most home cooks reach for. We did not include made-to-order or refrigerated fresh pesto, which falls into a different category in terms of shelf life, price point, and format.
Why We're Doing This: Ready-to-use pesto sauce seems foolproof: basil, garlic, nuts, cheese, oil, done. But pop open a jar and you’re either getting genuinely good basil sauce or something like green mayo, with salt, sugar, or truffle doing all the talking. Some pesto sauces taste fresh and balanced. Others taste like they've been sitting in a warehouse since 2019. Some brands put "Genovese" on the label to signal quality and superiority. We wanted to find out which ones you can rely on—if they’re truly ready-to-use or need a fix before they're pasta-ready.
How We Tasted: Each pesto was first sampled plain, straight off the spoon, to get a clean and unfiltered read on flavor, seasoning, and texture. Next, tested with pasta to taste how it’s often used.
Blind Taste Test: All brands were removed from their original packaging, put into identical containers, labeled with numbers only, and tasted blind to prevent brand bias.
How We Scored: Each brand was evaluated across 4 criteria: basil flavor, salt and seasoning, texture and body, and use-case. Final placements reflect the Pepper team's averaged impressions across all tasters.
Transparency: No brand paid for inclusion in this taste test. Royal and Fly Ace (Doña Elena) have been past advertising partners of Pepper.
