Flavor: Does it taste mild or beany? Sweet or neutral? Natural or processed? Does it have other notes—grassy, nutty, savory?
Soy Milk-ness: Does it taste distinctly like soy milk? Is it soy-forward or more faint or muted? If you were specifically craving soy milk and got this brand, would you feel satisfied or disappointed?
Mouthfeel: Does it feel creamy or watery? Is it pleasant to drink?
Fine Print
The Lineup: We tested 16 brands of local and boxed soy milk in Metro Manila. We sourced from major supermarkets, health food stores (Healthy Options, Real Food), and fresh soy milk vendors (Tiong Hwa, Soy & Bean, Soy Bueno). We prioritized original and unsweetened variants to represent each brand.
Why We’re Doing This: Fresh and boxed soy milk are worlds apart in quality. But if you live closer to a supermarket than a taho store, you make do with your options. Which boxed brand of soy milk is best? Do you get local or imported? Does price determine quality? Can boxed soy milk be as enjoyable as fresh? Questions we all love to answer with a blind taste test.
How We Tasted: Each brand was tasted as is, at room temperature. Simple syrup was provided to sweeten as needed.
Blind Taste Test: All brands were removed from their packaging, labeled, and tasted blind to prevent brand bias.
How We Scored: Each product was evaluated across 3 criteria. Final placements reflect the Pepper team’s averaged impressions.
Multiple Tests: This taste test has been updated over time. Current placements reflect both recent tastings and results from previous tests to keep comparisons consistent.
Transparency: No brand paid for inclusion in this taste test.
