Available in Local Groceries: We tested 18 boxed cow’s milk brands 5 pasteurized fresh milks, and 7 powdered milks in Manila to see which ones deserve a spot in your fridge.
Why We’re Doing This: Milk is an everyday purchase, but not all milk tastes the same. Boxed UHT milk, the go-to for Filipino households, has a distinct “cooked” taste from its sterilization process. Powdered milk, another popular option, pushes that cooked flavor even further. Pasteurized fresh milk, the priciest option, tends to taste closer to raw milk—but fresh doesn’t always mean better! Fresh milk can taste odd or funky with a palate raised on UHT. We tried all the grocery milk we could get our hands on to find out which ones taste best for drinking.
How We Tasted: Each brand was sampled at room temperature. Each powdered milk brand was prepared to package instructions.
Blind Taste Test: All samples were labeled and tasted blind to remove brand bias.
How We Scored: Each brand was evaluated across six criteria. Final placements reflect the Pepper team’s averaged impressions.
Multiple Tests: This taste test has been updated over time. Current placements reflect both recent tastings and results from previous tests to keep comparisons consistent.
Transparency: No brand paid for inclusion. However, Arla and Nestlé have been past and present advertising partners of Pepper.
