Flavor: Does the coconut come off strong or subtle? Does it have other notes—toasty, acidic, bitter?
Consistency: Is it thin and syrupy, thick and custard-like, or somewhere in between? Is it easy to spread across bread?
Sweetness: How sweet is the jam? Is it mild, balanced, or cloying? Does it compliment or overpower the coconut?
WYBI (Would You Buy It): Would you buy (and rebuy) this brand, considering overall enjoyment? Would you buy it for specific use cases?
Fine Print
The Lineup: We tested 6 brands of coconut jams from groceries and local retail stores. We focused on basic coconut jam, excluding flavored variants (ex. ube coconut jam) and non-jam types (ex. caramel, preserves).
Why We’re Doing This: When you’re facing the same bottle of coco jam every morning, spreading it on bread on autopilot, you might start to wonder: Is this the best jam that I could be having, or am I settling? Jam sticks around for weeks, and the wrong purchase could ruin your breakfasts for a long while. We got all the coco jam brands we could find, tried each one side by side, and ranked them.
How We Tasted: The brands were sampled as is and spread over toasted pandesal, all at room temperature.
Blind Taste Test: All brands were removed from their original packaging, numbered, then cooked in batches.
How We Scored: Each brand was evaluated across 4 criteria. Final placements reflect the Pepper team’s averaged impressions.
Transparency: No brand paid for inclusion in this taste test.
