Flavor Balance: Does it hit a real sweet-tangy balance, or does one flavor overpower everything else?
Heat: How spicy is the sauce? Is there a kick from chilies, a mild warmth, or nothing at all?
Consistency: Does it have the right viscosity to cling to food, not too watery, gelatinous, or starchy? Can you see actual chili flakes and seeds, or is it smooth and uniform?
WYBI (Would You Buy It?): Would you buy this sweet chili sauce over other brands? Does it deliver a satisfying balance of sweet and spicy for a good price?
Fine Print
The Lineup: We tested 9 sweet chili sauces off grocery shelves, all easy to find in any supermarket aisle. We focused on ready-to-use bottled and packed sauces.
Why We're Doing This: Sweet chili sauce isn’t ours. The Thai condiment came over and caught on hard enough that it’s unthinkable to have lumpia without it. Now that every local sauce brand makes its own version, we’re wondering: Do all sweet chili sauces taste the same? How do local sauces compare to foreign brands? Which ones nail that perfect sweet-tangy-spicy balance you’ll want for your fried food? We tested every brand off the grocery shelf to find out.
How We Tasted: Each brand was sampled straight from the bottle, removed from its packaging, relabeled, and tasted blind to prevent brand bias.
How We Scored: Each brand was evaluated across 3 criteria. Final placements reflect the Pepper team's averaged impressions.
Transparency: No brand paid for inclusion in this taste test. Del Monte has been a past advertising partner of Pepper.
