Flavor: Does it taste like meat, or mostly starch and filler? Is the sweet-salty balance there, or does one side take over? Any flavor notes beyond the classic “hotdog” taste?
Texture: Is it firm and springy with a clean bite, or mushy, rubbery, or grainy? Does it stay juicy after frying, or turn dry and dense?
WYBI (Would You Buy It?): Would you buy this over your usual brand? Is it flavorful and satisfying enough for the price?
Fine Print
The Lineup: We tested 7 red hotdogs from supermarkets in Metro Manila, all in the jumbo size, which every brand carries. We did not include cheese-filled hotdogs, chicken franks, or imported or deli-style sausages, which fall into a different category in terms of flavor and price.
Why We’re Doing This: Say “red hotdog,” and most of us picture Tender Juicy. It’s been the trusty star of kiddie parties, silog plates, and spaghetti trays for as long as we can remember, and we love it. Plenty of other red hotdogs sit next to it in the freezer, some cheaper, some claiming to be meatier. Is it time for a switch? We blind-tested 7red hotdogs to find out.
How We Tasted: Each hotdog was pan-fried according to package instructions.
Blind Taste Test: All brands were removed from their packaging, labeled, and tasted blind to prevent brand bias.
How We Scored: Each brand was evaluated across 3 criteria. Final placements reflect the Pepper team’s averaged impressions.
Transparency: No brand paid for inclusion in this taste test. CDO, Purefoods, and Swift have been past advertising partners of Pepper.
