This foolproof cream cheese frosting makes a rich, tangy topper for cakes and pastries.
There’s something about cream cheese frosting that makes it perfect on every cake, complementing whatever baked good it lands on with its rich, tangy creaminess. Powdered sugar thickens the whipped butter and cream cheese into a stable frosting.
Combine butter and cream cheese in a bowl of a stand mixer. You may also use a hand mixer and a mixing bowl. Beat mixture until creamy, well-combined, and lump-free.
Add vanilla extract and stir well to combine.
With the mixer on low, gradually add powdered sugar until completely combined and the frosting is thick. If you want your frosting less sweet, switch to cornstarch to thicken the frosting. If the frosting seems too thick, thin it out with milk or heavy cream. Use on cooled cakes and cupcakes.
