The Legazpi Market has been one of the Makati foodie crowd’s Sunday habit. Always packed and frequently humid, these qualities are overlooked for the sake of good food.
At the forefront stands numerous restaurants that are already enough to take away your attention from the organic market further down the tent. There’s the Indonesian stall selling some of the most delicious gado-gado, that pierogi place, the nasi lemak stall whose coconut rice I always eat with those mushroom chips (that I drown in their black garlic mayo dip and vinegar). But seriously, next time you’re at the market, start from the other side and check out Pizza Morena, a pizza store at the corner that serves brick-oven-fired pizzas that are classy, sophisticated, but outrageously delicious.
We like their signature Pizza Morena, which is a mélange of velvety mozzarella, creamy mascarpone, and nutty parmesan cheeses. But the well-rounded flavors of the dairy are anything but cloying—a far cry from the ubiquitous all-cheese pizzas (but they do have a delicious 4 Cheese and Chives pizza) as these are spangled with pistachios, drizzled with honey, and misted generously with truffle oil.
Vegetarian options are also available. Spinach & Artichoke and Pesto & Truffled Mushroom pizzas are straightforward, light, yet absolutely satisfying, while a Zaatar Vegan Pizza is also up for grabs.
Every pizza is freshly fired up in a brick oven that creates the craziest post-oven sizzle on the cheese. Garnished with some flowers from Down to Earth, you can really tell that a lot of heart and thought went into these pizzas. So if you’re already planning to head to the market this Sunday (or even if you haven’t yet), Pizza Morena is definitely something you should have on your table.
