Strolling along shops, markets, and stalls often lead to curious discoveries. On a recent trip to Singapore, our editor-in-chief picked up a unique shrimp paste fried chicken mix. As fans of shrimp-y flavors and fried chicken, we were all intrigued. In theory, it sounded like it’d be something delicious; maybe something like the chicken from our Under PHP200 bagoong rice.
It wasn’t quite what we expected. The coating was discernibly salty, although it didn’t penetrate the meat as well as we’d hoped. It didn’t taste like bagoong. But it was undeniably shrimp-y, in a way that divided the team. We recommend it with some kind of savory fried rice or saucy noodles. It would also work well as part of a spread with complementing Southeast Asian flavors.
