We Hacked Kanin Club’s Sinigang Rice so You Can Enjoy This Merry Dish at Home for the Holidays

Kanin Club needs more recognition, in our opinion. Yes, we love exploring new restaurants as much as the next person, but there’s something about the classics that we must pay our respects to. And that includes one of the OG lamon mall spots.

When you go into a restaurant and just want an order of their rice… they’re doing it right.

And one of the dishes that seems criminal to NOT order is their sinigang rice. It’s a pretty work intensive recipe, but we think you’ll find that this take is pretty on point. But you’re welcome to fight us in the comments section. See you there!

Kanin Club Sinigang Rice Food Hack

  • Serves: 4 people
  • Active time: 1 hour
  • Total time: 1.5 hours
  • Difficulty: Medium


Pork Belly

  • 4 cups water
  • 1 packet Maggi sinigang mix
  • 2 slices pork belly/liempo
  • 1 tbsp. oil

Tempura Vegetables

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup soda water
  • Ice cubes, for chilling
  • 6 kangkong leaves
  • 2 pieces okra, tops removed
  • Oil, for frying

Fried Rice

  • 2 tbsp. oil
  • 1 tbsp. garlic, minced
  • ½ cup sitaw, chopped
  • ½ cup white onion, diced
  • 2 green chilies, sliced
  • 1 bird’s eye chili, whole
  • 2 cups white rice, cooked
  • 1 packet Maggi sinigang mix


  1. For the pork belly, bring water and sinigang mix to a boil in a small pot.
  2. Add the pork belly and cook until tender. Remove from the liquid and pat dry.
  3. In a pan heat oil and pan fry belly until golden brown.
  4. Set aside.
  5. To make tempura vegetables, heat oil in a small pot to 350F.
  6. In a bowl, combine flour, egg, and soda water. Chill down mixture with ice cubes.
  7. Dip each piece of kangkong in batter and fry until slightly golden and crispy.
  8. Repeat with okra.
  9. Place vegetables on paper towels to drain. Set aside.
  10. For the sinigang rice, add oil to a hot pan or wok.
    Add the garlic, sitaw, and white onion, and cook for 3–5 minutes or until vegetables start to soften.
  11. Add the green chili, red chili, and rice, and continue to cook and stir until vegetables are evenly distributed throughout the rice.
  12. Add the packet of sinigang mix and continue cooking until the rice is evenly colored and hot.
  13. To serve, add rice to a large bowl, then turn out onto a plate.
  14. Top the rice with the pork belly and tempura fried vegetables.
  15. Serve.
