We recreated the dalgona candy from Netflix's Squid Game to see if we'd survive. (We made great candy, but we'd probably die.)
Netflix's Squid Game has changed how we all see our childhood games. An innocent hide-and-seek or tug-of-war is portrayed as a life-threatening gamble, with those outsmarting the game the only ones coming out alive. One of these games—spoiler alert, in case you haven't seen it—involves carving out shapes from a "honeycomb" also known as dalgona candy.
These sugary treats are commonly enjoyed by Korean children. They're basically caramel flattened into disks; for novelty, they're stamped with different shapes like stars, triangles, and even umbrellas.
Prepare surface: Lay a sheet of parchment paper or a silicone mat on a flat surface and dust with baking soda. Set aside.
Add sugar to a pan over medium-high heat. Using a wooden spoon or chopsticks, mix the sugar until fully melted. Add baking soda and mix quickly until light in color and the mixture starts to foam. Immediately transfer candy onto parchment paper or a silicone mat dusted with baking soda.
Cut candy: Sprinkle more baking soda over the candy. Brush the bottom of a clean bowl with oil, and press it down over the candy to flatten it out. Carefully remove the bowl and press a cookie cutter mold over it to indent shape. Remove mold and allow candy to cool down before serving.
