Pepper’s English-Filipino Cheat Sheet: Fruits

Many of the fruits we grow and eat today, either on their own or with other delicious ingredients, comes from friars, sailors, and soldiers who all visited the Philippines from Mexico. In her book, Tikim: Essays on Philippine Food and Culture, the late Doreen Fernandez revealed that many of our local terms for fruits and vegetables are derived from Mexican words. It’s the reason why our names for these fruits sound so similar to their Mexican counterparts.

    Tamarind is sampaloc? Kamatsile is a different fruit we call kamunsil in the Visayas. Nice illustration 🙂
