Pepper.ph Turns 3 Today!

Three years ago, when we published our first-ever post on Pepper.ph followed by our first-ever recipe (on Spinach Artichoke Dip!), establishing ourselves as a silly and rebellious food blog, we knew we would get ourselves into trouble. In our current mission to change the way food writing is done in the Philippines, and to become the most entertaining, most trusted and most valuable online food resource for the local Internet generation, we knew we would be getting our hands literally dirty as our waistlines expanded and our faces grew rounder, instantly eliminating us from any chances to be a Calvin Klein model of epic Bieber proportions, all for the sake of food. Was it worth it? Hell yeah.

Over the years, we’ve seen the Metro Manila food industry evolve and grow at such a rapid pace, even fast food joints tweaked their menus just to follow suit. Filipinos have become more adventurous and aware about what goes into their mouths, rolling every bite around their palates, appreciating every morsel. It truly is an exciting time for the Metro Manila food scene. Last year was incredible, but this year is shaping up to be one of the strongest and most memorable ones so far. For the first time, one of our homegrown chefs, Tony Boy Escalante of the Antonio’s Group made it to the San Pellegrino Asia’s Top 50. Highly anticipated international gastronomic festival Madrid Fusión will be held this coming April 24-26 at the SMX Convention Center, and we couldn’t be more proud to be part of this creative and progressive industry. Food has now become so powerful, and it is our responsibility to continue dishing out content that is not only relevant but also always honest. In this line of work, there are still a lot of missteps, tricky encounters, and we have loads more to learn from, but surely enough, the good outweighs the bad. Every day is a school day, and we take every experience (whether it be good or bad) as an opportunity to improve in our craft. All 4/20 jokes aside, the love and appreciation we’ve received from you guys has been truly overwhelming in the most positive way. It’s also still unbelievable how our site’s growth has been progressing at a really fast rate—none of us even imagined it reaching this far. But we won’t be complacent. If anything, this only inspires and pushes us to do better at what we do. So from our hearts of hearts (and stomachs of stomachs), thank you. There will definitely be more great things to expect from Pepper.ph. Thank you for sticking with us through all the good times and the bad. This milestone would’ve been impossible without you.

Mikka Wee is former editor of Pepper.ph and was part of the team until she got whisked away to Singapore in 2016 where she worked in advertising and eventually found herself back in the food industry. She currently does marketing work for two popular Singaporean dessert brands and is a weekly columnist for The Philippine Daily Inquirer’s lifestyle brand, Preen.ph. She has always been crazy about travel, food, and her dog Rocket.
