Today on Pepper Eats: Comfort Food at Its Best

March 15, 2019

Bangin’ Bagnet from the Flying Pig (PHP 285)

Processed with VSCOcam with g3 preset

Location: Ground floor, Eastwood Mall

Adee says: “The bagnet was cooked just right, giving it that addictive crispiness we all love. I like that it’s not salty, and the vinegar it came with tastes better as the meal goes on. Craving for it now as I type this.”

Rating: 8.5/10

Homemade Corned Beef from Harina Artisan Bakery (PHP 285)

Location: White Plains, QC

Diana says: “The homemade corned beef did not disappoint. It tastes like something my lola would serve me for breakfast. The texture and seasoning on the stuffed roasted tomato was spot on. I’d buy the stuffing in a jar if I could. The only downside was that we waited for over forty-five minutes for our order when we were the only ones there at nine in the morning on a Sunday.”

Rating: 8.5/10 on the dish alone and 6/10 because we had to wait.

Maja Blanca Crepe from Sentro 1771 (PHP 180)

Processed with VSCOcam

Location: Serendra, Fort Bonifacio

Kat says: “I love maja blanca, which is why I ordered this mash-up of a dessert, but Sentro didn’t do my beloved kakanin justice. The maja was bland and lacked the subtle corny creaminess that I love, and the coco jam overpowered what was already lackluster to begin with.”

Rating: 4/10

Osso Bucco Alla Milanese from Carpaccio (PHP 1,090)

Location: Yakal St., Makati

Lars says: “The veal was mmmMMmmm as I always enjoy eating animals before they’ve had a chance to lead a full and productive life. However, the risotto ai funghi on the side was the unsung hero. I’m not a big risotto person but this I loved.”

Rating: 8.78/10

Shio Tonkotsu Ramen from Yushoken (PHP 320)

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Location: Molito, Alabang

Mikka says: “It was my first time ever to finish a bowl of ramen. Despite my aversion against the bamboo shoots, this bowl of Japanese noodle soup has been the one I was most satisfied with in Metro Manila.”

Rating: 9/10

Double Chicken Burger from Burger Machine (Two Burgers for PHP 40)

Location: BCDA Housing, Taguig City

Nico says : “It’s undeniably cheap and gets the job done. And by job I mean satisfying your 3 PM craving for unhealthy food to stuff your face with. Yes, it tasted more like extenders and spicy sauce than chicken, and I did feel queasy from all that grease, but I’d probably buy it again. ”

Rating: 6.5/10

Akagai Sashimi from Tanabe (PHP 270)

Location: Remedios St., Malate, Manila

Serna says: “The chewy, briny slices of this arch shell mollusk are a bit of an acquired taste, but these were bursting with freshness. The smooth edges of the sashimi are testament to the chef’s superior knife skills as the buttery tenderness of akagai flesh makes it a challenge to slice into neat strips. A quick dip into a dish of soy sauce, and these babies are good to go.”

Rating: 9/10
