Tinapa Rice from 1st Colonial Grill Express (PHP 199)

Addi says: “It doesn’t only look pretty; it lives up to the hype. The slices of ripe mango are a pleasant surprise, contrasting the saltiness of the egg and the smoky flavor of the tinapa. My only issue, however, is that they shouldn’t say this dish serves 3-4 people because I’d gladly finish it by myself.”

Butao King from Ramen Nagi Manila (PHP 390)

Adee says: “Prior to Nagi’s opening, I was getting sick of all the tonkotsu ramen I was eating. So imagine my delight when this unimpressive looking bowl went beyond all my expectations. For the first time in a long time, I truly enjoyed tonkotsu ramen again.”

Rating: 9.7/10 (only because Nagi’s famous Black King is the perfect 10 for me)

Soft-Shell Crab Salad from Torch (PHP 299)

Location: UP Town Center

Diana says: “Kind of a let-down for their best-selling salad. With grapes, mangoes, and pomegranate dressing, I find that it has too many sweet elements. Also, I could hardly taste the soft-shell crab from beneath the not so crispy breading.”

Rating: 6/10

Baler’s Famous Suman and Fresh Tropical Fruits from Costa Pacifica (PHP 150)

Kat says: “I’m obviously deducting points for the lack of fresh tropical fruits on the plate. But if they didn’t mention it, I wouldn’t have missed it. Thesuman is delicious, sweeter than most varieties. The natural peanut butter is lovely. But my favorite part of this dish is the coco jam. It’s richer, less sweet, and has a deeper, more intense coconut flavor than any I have ever had. It’s so good, I bought all the resort’s remaining stock of the stuff and now eat it straight from the jar with a spoon.”

Rating: 7/10 (8/10 if they didn’t make me expect fruits)

Hijo de Leche Bronut (PHP 110)

Location: SM Aura

Lars says: “Hand on chest, of the dozens of cronuts I’ve been forced to eat this past year (both work-related and otherwise), Bronuts’ is the hands down winner for me. It occupies that sweet spot in the middle of the venn diagram of price, taste, and unpretentious pastry-ness.”

Tijuana Maki from Sensei Sushi (PHP 280)

Mikka says: “Sensei Sushi is probably the first restaurant that friends overhyped but didn’t disappoint. Bruce Ricketts is a kitchen prodigy. I’ve tried some of his creations in JJ’s events, but this maki (despite containing raw fish, which I won’t normally touch) left me speechless. The green chili warms your mouth, and once it starts to reach the burning point, the sweet mango cools it down. I’m very particular about the slime-factor of raw fish, but the tuna and snapper were cut just right. It’s definitely worth the trip down south.”

Rating: 12/10

Samgyupsal & Chadolbaegi Buffet at Don Day (PHP 399)

Location: L. Sumulong Memorial Circle, Antipolo City

Nico says: “It’s finally happened. The Koreans have gotten tired of us asking for banchan refills so they caved in and made a buffet out of it. The spread isn’t anything spectacular in taste, but the real draw for me is that I can stuff my lettuce rolls fatter than a thanksgiving turkey with the unlimited brisket and belly.”

Razor Clams from Century Seafood Restaurant (PHP 560)

Serna

Location: G/F, Century Park Hotel, Roxas Blvd., Malate, Manila

Serna says: “Awash in a light, delicately-flavored sauce, the razor clam flesh was both succulent and springy: evidence that it was cooked very gently. Spirals of clear, al dente vermicelli made for a great contrast in textures (and for mopping up the extra sauce).”

    BRONUTS! Yes! I was able to try 5 of their flavors – PMS, Belgian Chocolate with Salted Caramel, Cream Cheese and Bacon, Super Floss, Hijo de Leche. I’ll definitely get 4 of them again (and try the other flavors) – all except PMS. They were nearly sold out when I finally got to try them at SM Aura as well, so a lot of their trays were empty, but being a solid Bro, one of the owners got a tray, scraped all the crumbs and fallen toppings, and then sprinkled them into my box! I was so gladly surprised that I couldn’t say a thing! Hahaha! I wish they’d have their pop-up store in a mall in QC this year.
