It’s a Dessert Party in Today’s Pepper Eats: Pie, Cupcake, and Ice Cream

February 26, 2019

White Chocolate Ice Cream from Family Mart (PHP 25)

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Location: 8101 Pearl Plaza, Pearl Drive, Ortigas

Addi says: “It was huge, but the ice cream itself tasted like 75% water. I should’ve bought a Cornetto Drumstick instead.”

Rating: 3/10

Chicken Mami and Pork Siomai from Kowloon House (PHP 60 and PHP 55, respectively)

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Location: White Plains, Katipunan

Adee says: “When you’re drunk, hungry and broke, they magically become better than they should be. I appreciate the siomai’s size, they’re a good deal even when you’re sober.”

Rating: 6/10 under normal conditions, 9/10 if you’re starving and intoxicated

Lemon Meringue Pie from Lucca Bakery (PHP 105)

Location: UP Town Center, Quezon City

Diana says: “The filling was too gummy that it made it difficult to cut through with a fork. You can totally see that the crust is separated from the rest of the pie. Though I found the balance of tart and sweet to be just right, the pie components just didn’t come together.”

Rating: 4/10

S’mores Cupcake from Wildflour (PHP 125)

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Location: Net Lima Building, Fort Bonifacio

Kat says: “The chocolate cupcake was average and the marshmallow topping reminds of the inside of the local Mallows treat. What put me off most about this was the bottom of the cupcake, which was a layer of crushed graham crackers. It was literally just that. It didn’t form a solid crust, wasn’t melded to the cake, and made a powdery mess every time I sliced into it with a fork.”

Rating: 4/10

Hickory Smoked Barbecued Country Ribs from Banapple (PHP 185)

Location: Katipunan Extension

Larsy says: “Like a hug from your Lola, always the same, never disappoints, and you go home satisfied every time.”

Rating: 8/10

Rosu Katsu Set from Ginza Bairin (PHP 345 for the regular size)

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Location: Glorietta 2 (facing Palm Drive)

Mikka says: “I seriously cannot tell the difference of Ginza Bairin’s with Yabu’s and Saboten’s. But their Miso Soup is my favorite amongst all three.”

Rating: 8/10

Tapsilog from Rodic’s (PHP 80)

Location: Shopping Center, UP Diliman

Nico says: “Many, many, many years from now, when my kids study in UP, they will no doubt find themselves eating here. And I bet this tapsilog will taste exactly as it did today. Let’s all take a moment to be thankful for that.”

Rating: 7/10

Geso Karaage from Tanabe (PHP 240)

Location: 553 Remedios St., Malate, Manila

Serna says: “Leave it to the Japanese to kick a** at deep-frying. The tentacles were coated in just the right amount of a ridiculously addictive breading mixture (seriously, they could bottle the stuff and I’d buy it), and were both tender and springy. If it wasn’t for the crisp exterior, you wouldn’t know that the squid was deep-fried since the fritters weren’t oily at all. The accompanying ponzu sauce was a delightful study in tart-savory contrasts, and though I don’t drink, I can imagine that this would be a great accompaniment to an ice-cold bottle of Asahi or so.”

Rating: 9/10

I stay away from the plain Vanilla/White Chocolate ice cream in Family Mart. I only order either the White Chocolate & Green Tea combo, or pure Green Tea.

Try the Cheesecake Ice Cream at Mini Stop. No advertising here, it’s just that my officemates and I are raving over its deliciousness.
