We’ve Got Banana-Nutella Pizza, Squid Ink Spaghetti, and Marrow-less Bulalo in Today’s Pepper Eats

February 15, 2019

Banana Nutella from Project Pie (PHP 145)

Processed with VSCOcam with g3 preset

Location: Bluebay Walk, EDSA-Macapagal Blvd.

Addi says: “I’m glad my friends insisted that we get one of their dessert pizzas (the concept to me was ridiculous), because this was super worth it. The dough tasted like a thick toasted crepe–which is a good thing, and as expected, the classic banana and Nutella combo worked its magic. Just ask the servers to bring your dessert pizza in after you’ve finished your “real” pizza, as the dough turns dry and rubbery when left in the open.”

Rating: 8.5/10

Organic Eggs Tagliolini from Va Bene Pasta Deli (PHP 390)

Adee

Location: Petron Gas Station, EDSA corner Pasay Road

Adee says: “You really can’t go wrong with this. It looks so simple, and yet tastes so incredible. There’s a lot of subtle flavors going on that my plebian tongue can’t quite isolate and describe all of them. Highly recommended.”

Rating: 9.5/10

Bacon and Cheese Stuffed Chicken Breast from Pino Bar (PHP 225)

Diana

Location: Jupiter, Makati

Diana says: “The chicken was a tad too tough for my liking. The mango rice was promising but disappointed with a lack of seasoning. But I still love Pino Bar.”

Rating: 6/10

Kouign Aman from JiPan (PHP 75)

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Location: SM Megamall

Kat says: “Because commenters on my Kouign Amann post kept talking about this, I had to try it. It’s reasonably buttery, but since it’s baked flat, it misses the textural contrasts it would’ve had if it was baked in a round mold. The crunchy, sugary coating is delicious, though.”

Rating: 7/10

Large Garlic Steak Sandwich from Quiznos (PHP 395)

Lars

Location: The Land of Disappointment

Lars says: “Somewhere out there, at this very moment, someone is on a date with a person they met online. As our friend sits there, watching the other person order the most expensive item on the menu with neither shame nor hesitation, he marvels at the miraculous things modern photo-editing software is now capable of achieving. Marvels, and despairs. That’s how I feel, like I’ve been Myspace angle’d by a sandwich.”

Rating: 3.4/10

Bulalo from Hungry Surfer (PHP 280)

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Location: Baler, Aurora

Mikka says: “I don’t know if I should give this a high rating because I enjoyed the strong garlic taste of this soup. But for a Bulalo, this was severely lacking in all the beefy flavors I would naturally expect upon ordering it. Also, the meat was rubbery and lacked the fat and marrow. (I WANT MY MARROW!!!) I would’ve given this a much higher rating if they called this Garlic Soup instead. The corn was good, though. But still.. No marrow. *tableflip*”

Rating: 2/10

Squid Ink Spaghetti from Capricciosa (PHP 205)

Nico

Location: Greenbelt 3

Nico says: “I felt sorry that a baby kraken had to die for this dish. Way too heavy on the squid ink. It felt so gritty and heavy in my mouth, that I had a hard time enjoying it. Couldn’t taste anything else, either. Whatever else they threw in the dish got lost in all that ink.”

Rating: 4/10

Deep-fried Snickers from Zark’s (PHP 125)

Serna

Location: Archer’s Nook, 2464 Taft Avenue, Malate, Manila

Serna says: “Though a tad too sweet, this was an improvement on the Snickers bar (which is really saying something). This is best eaten the moment it’s served to truly enjoy the hot-cold contrast and the crunchiness of the batter. The generous scoop of vanilla ice cream doesn’t hurt either.”

Rating: 8/10

That Quizno’s sandwich looks good in the pic; too bad the taste doesn’t match its appearance. May I know where they went wrong? 😀

And as for the Va Bene Pasta dish, I’ve got to get my hands on that!

    • Lars Roxas says:

zero taste. i had to smother it in chili sauce just to finish the entire thing, and even then, the experience was a bit sad.

    • Adrian De Leon says:

Oh, you must! It’s incredible. May konting suya factor lang, but if you love thick creamy sauces that don’t overwhelm the palate, it’s heavenly.

      • Nica Angeles says:

I luuurve thick creamy sauces! I actually read a review of this unassuming place in a popular mag way back, but the pasta dish that was featured was the one with truffles. Seems this resto leans towards rich dishes. No complaints here. 🙂

On the strength of the review and your follow-up comment, I shall now blackmail the husband into taking me there this payday weekend! 🙂

        • Adrian De Leon says:

There’s truffle oil in this, but it doesn’t overpower the dish. Just enough for you to know it’s there. 🙂

Kouign Amann is back in Jipan! 🙂 Wow~ it used to be round and flat. 😀

I still prefer Subway over Quiznos. I love the combination of Red Vinegar and Sweet Onion dressing. 🙂 Also, Quiznos smell like a freezer filled with meat but switched off. X_X

Dang it. I have got to try Va Bene now. @.@ I was put off by one of my favorite blogger’s rather lackluster review about the place, but Adee’s dish makes me consider otherwise. @.@

    • Adrian De Leon says:

Haha! Your expectations might be too high. I mean, I really like it, but your preferences (and that blogger’s) might be different. It’s just a simple dish done extremely well.

      • Sergia Susana says:

Simple dishes done extremely well are the cornerstone of good cuisine, methinks. 🙂 Said blogger mentioned that the acoustics put you off the food, which was described as unremarkable. @.@

    • Katrina says:

I don’t know who this blogger is, but he/she’s wrong. Haha. Va Bene has got to be one of the best (if not THE best) Italian restaurant in the city. Yes, the acoustics suck, the place is too cramped, but I’m willing to put up with all that for the food. So far, everything I’ve tried from there was fantastic, straightforward, fresh, and simple. Meatballs in tomato sauce, salads (one with mozzarella, one with caramelized apples), ricotta-eggplant tortellini that makes me want to lick the sauce off my plate (and I HATE eggplant), strawberries and ice cream with balsamic vinegar, all of them really, really, really good. I’ve submitted the first two on Pepper Eats, actually. So, yes, please, go to Va Bene and try it for yourself.

*now I’m thinking that I built it up too much, but I’m about 90% confident that you won’t be disappointed*

  4. Frond says:

Try at Corazon’s, Shang. The paella is a must try!

  5. Guest says:

You should’ve tried the chocnut turon in Bay-ler View in Baler! As well as the Crispy Tadyang in Bay’s Inn! 🙂

  6. Tina A says:

1, I dislike Quiznos because I had a similar experience. 2, I’m disappointed that squid ink pasta didn’t turn out well either (because I love squid ink anything). Best squid ink dish I’ve had is pancit my greataunt brings over from Meycauayan (creys now I want some). 3, I really need to convince my family to go to Va Bene (we’re an Italian food loving family). 4, GOT TO GET MY HANDS ON KOUIGN AMAN!!!!
