There’s Pancakes and Pancake Sandwiches in This Week’s Pepper Eats

2-piece Fried Chicken Meal from Kipp’s (PHP 135)

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Location: Food Court, SM Malls

Addi says: “Kipp’s chicken never disappoints: the chicken pieces are huge with super crispy and thick skin and really tasty meat. Although the greasy yellow rice adds a little more excitement to the dining experience, I still can’t decide whether I like this more than the Jollibee Chicken Joy. No, please don’t make me choose.”

Rating: 10/10

Chili Chocolate from Gelatissimo (PHP 120)

Location: SM Megamall Atrium

Adee says: “My favorite ‘weird’ ice cream flavor. The sweetness and creaminess are light, which is the way I like my gelato. Be warned though, the chili gets deceptively hot.”

Rating: 8.8/10

Pancake Sandwich from 50’s Diner (PHP 135)

Location: Brent Road, Baguio

Diana says: “The dish is four layers of pancakes, bacon, lettuce, chicken sausage patty, and served with spicy maple syrup. They were quite stingy with the bacon and I couldn’t tell the difference between ordinary maple syrup and the spicy maple syrup but for a huge ass serving like this for one hundred thirty-five bucks, it’s a steal. After having this, I am inspired to stack together a McDonald’s big breakfast and pancakes just so I can have this every morning in Manila.”

Rating: 7/10

Butcher’s Best Pizza from Stella (PHP 325)

Location: High Street Central, Fort Bonifacio Global City

Kat says: “With a name like that, I expected a pizza heavy with meaty toppings. I was disappointed. There were only a few slices of pepperoni, ham, and I don’t think I even noticed the sausage. The crust was good, though: crispy on the edges, chewy (but not soggy) towards the center.”

Rating: 6/10

Ox Brain from Mr. Kabab (PHP 70)

Location: Pearl Drive

Lars says: “I’d like to think that every time I eat anything’s brain, I consume that creature’s soul and I get a little bit smarter.”

Rating: 6.66/10

Blueberry and Cream Cheese Pancake Tower from Maple (PHP 450)

Location: San Antonio Plaza, Forbes Park, Makati

Mikka says: “Overpriced for a measly stack of pancakes, but I was craving for them so what the hey. Even though they’re part of the Pancake House group, the difference between the pancakes here and of the bright-orange restaurant is spot-on since these are fluffier (probably because of the buttermilk).”

Rating: 7/10

Bagnet meal from Fariñas Ilocos Empanada (PHP 99)

Location: Better Living, Parañaque Branch

Nico says: “Definitely a hidden gem. I didn’t expect the store would execute bagnet so well. Great meat to fat ratio, and the slices were like thick bacon cuts. It crunched and cracked just right with every bite I took, and the bagnet just melted in my mouth. Was a bit under-seasoned, but the salted duck egg and tomato made up for it.”

Diner’s rating : 8/10

Shrimp Po’ Boy Sandwich from Kettle (PHP 419)

Location: 5th floor, East Wing, Shangri-la Mall, Mandaluyong

Serna says: “Just look at the size of that thing. I actually wished I had a wider mouth (or a jaw I could unhinge, just like in one of those National Geographic animal documentaries), just so I could take bigger bites of this carbo-loaded baby. The shrimp were seasoned and fried to perfection, with no trace of oil on them whatsoever. The remoulade had the right balance of acidity and richness to set off the shrimp, and the ciabatta roll was a nice, crunchy vehicle for the generous filling.”

Rating: 11/10

  1. The servings at 50’s Diner are always huge. The sandwiches and dishes aren’t the greatest, but they’re great value. When we go to Baguio we make it a point to eat there even once. Beware the crowds, though! We go to the place for brunch or in mid-afternoon so that we won’t have to wait to be seated.

Would love to try the brains, but just the thought of it makes my stomach squirm.

    1. You can also try their other branch at the military cut off area 🙂 same taste, same huge serving but less hassle with the crowd! 🙂

      1. Oh wow, I didn’t know they have a branch there! Thanks so much for the tip. 🙂

  2. Wow, best Pepper Eats yet. I have to try that bagnet (in my neck of the woods, yay) and po’ boy.

  3. Why is chili-chocolate ice cream just catching on now? It’s always been a delicious little gem of goodness. (y)

    1. I’ve been a fan of them for a while, but I keep forgetting to hunt for places that serve them since I’m not really an ice cream guy.

      1. Try to make one if you really wanna try. It’s a bit tedious to do (especially of you don’t have an automatic ice cream mixer), but it’s well worth it. 🙂
