If You’re Crazy for Katsu, Then Let This Week’s Pepper Eats Entice You

Rosu Katsu Set (120g) from Tonkatsu by Terazawa (PHP 345)

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Location: Greenbelt 2

Addi says: “Since I haven’t tried Saboten or Ginza Bairin, my only benchmark for good katsu in Manila is Yabu. Terazawa’s was good–crispy golden crust and tender, flavorful meat, but it wasn’t better than Yabu’s.”

Rating: 6.5/10 for the dish, 3/10 for the really slow service

Com Suon Cha from Bawai’s Vietnamese Kitchen (PHP 420)

Adee

Location: White Plains, Katipunan

Adee says: “Love at first bite. I never thought liempo could be this good. The mushroom egg pie it comes with tastes a lot better than expected. I wish there was more of it included, though.”

Rating: 8.7/10

Salted Caramel Pancakes by Pancake House (PHP 188)

Diana

Location: Makati Medical Center in particular

Diana says: “I was sick when I had this and wasn’t able to finish the serving ,but I’m in love with anything caramel so this gets a default score of 8. Pancake house gets a plus 2 for the pretty presentation but minus three for their clumpy linguine.”

Diner’s rating: 7/10

Thai Chicken Sandwich from Lemon iCafe (PHP 240)

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Location: d’ Mall, Boracay

Kat says: “This has a lot of things going on: satay and lemon marinated chicken, sweet peanut sauce, crisp cucumber, and citrusy cilantro. But it all works together to make a flavorful and well-balanced sandwich. I just wish the ciabatta bun was lightly toasted and the potato chips crispier.”

Rating: 8/10

Nutella Soup from Gino’s Brick Oven Pizza (PHP 350)

Lars

Location: Katipunan (above Mercury Drug Store)

Lars says: “It’s like finally hooking up with your highschool crush a decade later. It may sound good on paper, but reality just ends up being disappointing, boring, and utterly forgettable.”

Rating: 5/10

Yam Pla Duk Foo (Crispy Catfish with Mango Salad) from Jatujak (PHP 195)

Mikka

Location: 2/F Unit 237 SM Mall of Asia, Entertainment Mall (obviously copy/pasted that from Google)

Mikka says: “I really love deep-fried catfish salad and Jatujak’s is one of my favorites. For its price, I think it beats Soms’s version by a long shot. The catfish is fried to a light, shattering crisp (like deep-fried meat floss), while the tangy vinaigrette makes me have a Datu-Puti-close-your-eyes-because-you-get-that-great-sour-tickle moment. So good.”

Rating: 9/10

Horlicks Ice Cream from Merry Moo (PHP 70)

Nico

Location: Ground Floor, SM Aura

Nico says: “It’s a very satisfying cup of ice cream, I bet even two girls can be okay with just sharing a cup of this baby. I really like the fact that it just feels dense, rich, and smooth. They don’t cheat you by fluffing the ice cream up with air, like most mass produced ones do.”

Rating: 8/10

Chicken Katsu from Crazy Katsu (PHP 145)

Meya

Location: Taft Avenue

Pam says: “Always one of my favorite cheap meals. The ponzu-like sauce with chili is tart and spicy, perfect for cutting through the richness of deep fried katsu. It’s not traditional, but I love the bright flavors. Today the breading was just a little floury, but still good for 145 bucks.”

Rating: 8/10

Roast Chicken Sausage on Mushroom Spatzle from Spatzle Euro Market Cafe (PHP 295)

Serna

Location: 5th floor, East Wing, Shangri-la Plaza Mall

Serna says: “The chicken was a bit dry, but it was very tender and it went very well with the spatzle. A bit of lemon brightened up the whole dish, but I would suggest sharing this as it’s quite hearty.”

Diner’s rating: 8/10

I’ve had the grilled liempo at Bawai and it is, indeed, excellent. Really, really flavorful and tender. I would’ve submitted it for Pepper Eats, too, but my siblings got to the dish before I could take a good photo. #pepperwriterproblems
