Check Out the Best Pares We’ve Ever had for only 75 Bucks in Today’s Pepper Eats

December 20, 2018

Tokusen Toroniku Ramen (Miso) from Hokkaido Ramen Santouka (PHP 370.00)

Addi says: “My favorite part of the dish was the pork cheeks, which were very tender and super flavorful on their own. Not the best ramen I’ve had, but definitely in my Top 5.”

Rating: 8.5/10

Beef Pares from the Original Pares Mami House (PHP 75)

Adee says: “Quite possibly the best pares I’ve ever had. It’s not too sweet, and not too strong on the star anise. The beef was very tender and practically melts in your mouth. I can’t think of a better meal for 75 bucks.”

Rating: 9.2/10

Under the Sun from Kitchen, Greenbelt 3 (PHP 255)

Diana says: “The menu says seafood combination with chili-cream sauce, but this dish tasted more ‘sweet’ than ‘chili.’ Not exactly bad, but it wasn’t what I was expecting. The seafood was fresh and cooked perfectly though.”

Rating: 7/10

Chicken ala King Rice Bowl from KFC (PHP 90)

Lars says: “If KFC was ‘N Sync, the Chicken ala King would be the JC Chasez of the rice bowl family. Under rated and oft-forgotten, but arguably just as good as Justin/the Kung Pao Chicken.”

Rating: 7.6/10

Deep-Fried Shrimp with Salted Egg Yolk Sauce from Wah Fung, Hong Kong (HKD $89, around PHP 510)

Mikka says: “The shrimps were battered lightly and deep-fried, yet the meat remained juicy and tender. The salted egg yolk sauce was rich and buttery, and it made me want to lick the plate when no one was looking. But since I try to be well-mannered most of the time (and there were a lot of people), I used the broccoli to mop the remaining sauce, turning those once-healthy florets into something so deliciously evil, it would be a crime to still call them vegetables.”

Rating: 9/10

Tailgate Classic from Skinny Mike’s Sports Bar (PHP 295)

Nico says: “It was a BIG burger. The meaty flavor was excellent, though the patty itself was just a bit stringy. It had proper bite though, but I did make the mistake of getting it medium, so it wasn’t as tender as I wanted. Definitely needed more seasoning, too. Still, it was a nice meal.”

Rating: 7/10

Sapporo Miso Ramen from Ramen Bar (PHP 320)

Ramen Bar

Kat says: “The milky richness I look for is there, but I wish it was more pronounced. This could also use a little more chashu. Still, on rainy evening, nothing quite fits the bill like a warm bowl of ramen, even a middling one.”

Rating: 6.5/10

Taco Salad from Sugarhouse (PHP 165)

Serna says: “It’s basically a deconstructed taco, but there was a good balance of the components. The taco shell-filling ration was also better than most conventional tacos I’ve had. It’s great if you’re craving for a taco, but you don’t want to get your hands dirty (or you happen to be on a first date).”

Rating: 8/10

  2. Adrian De Leon says:

Addi!!! Super favorite ko yang Toroniku ng Santouka. Ang mahal lang talaga. 🙁

    • Addi dela Cruz says:

True! Mahal compared to other items in Santouka’s menu, pero I was thinking it’s in the same price range lang din as other ramen worth-trying in Manila, so push lang! Hahah

  3. Marley says:

Where is Original Pares Mami House?

    • Adrian De Leon says:

It’s at N.S. Amoranto street in Quezon City. (formerly Retiro) The place is always packed during lunch and dinner time! If that’s not an indicator of good food, I don’t know what is.

      • Pilar San Luis says:

We go here too for our pares fix. We usually order to-go since the place is always full. I believe they’ve been around since the 40’s?

        • Adrian De Leon says:

I know for sure that the place is older than me. They say it’s full even after midnight! Sobrang wild lang. 🙂

  4. Addi dela Cruz says:

Oy Lars, favorite ko yang Chicken ala King from KFC! It’s my go-to meal pag stressed/feeling down, sobrang sulit kasi. 🙂
