A Budding Romance Between Two of Our Tsukemen-Slurping Writers, Manifested in Today’s Pepper Eats

December 13, 2018

Pepper Eats is our weekly photo-journal featuring food we stuffed our faces with.

Hire Miso Katsu from Yabu (PHP 350)

Addi says: “The pork was perfect as usual, but the sauce was too rich for my liking. It was worth a try, but never again would I pick this over any of Yabu’s regular, non-Miso sets.”

Rating: 6.5/10

Jumbo Char-Siu Tsukemen (Large) from Mitsuyado Sei-Men (PHP 360)

Adee says: “It’s very different from the average tonkotsu ramen. The dipping broth has a really strong flavor and aftertaste. It’s not better or worse, just different.  The Char-siu is great, but it tastes more like a toasted lechon. Still, this was a satisfying meal, as the noodles and serving portions were great.”

Rating: 7.8/10

Cheese Sauce Tsukemen from Mitsuyado Sei-Men (PHP 310 for a regular-sized bowl)

Serna says: “I was a bit dubious about the cheese sauce since it looked like liquefied Cheez Whiz. Poured on top of the firm noodles prior to dipping, it added a creamy saltiness to the dish. The dipping sauce itself tasted as if it were simmered for hours, and it had bright citrusy notes and generous chunks of pork.”

Rating: 8/10

Lemon Coconut Pie from Slice (PHP 150)

Diana says: “Not too sweet but lacking the lemon tartness one would expect from a lemon pie. All the components just melted into one big mushy blah in my mouth.”

Rating: 5/10

S’mores Tart from Cupcakes by Sonja (PHP 88)

Kat says: “I hate photos of food that’s already been eaten, but this is an exception. You need to see the five layers of goodness in this tart: (1) a deep chocolate base, (2) a marshmallow fluff layer, (3) a silky chocolate ganache, (4) Graham cracker round, and (5) a toasted marshmallow. And I didn’t have to build a campfire and sleep outdoors to enjoy it.”

Rating: 9/10

Deep Fried Bacon-Wrapped Burger from Zark’s (PHP 240 with free fries and iced tea)

Lars says: “More of a novelty, really. The bread was soggy, it was hard to eat, and the patty was unremarkable. It didn’t taste bad, but it wasn’t anything special either.”

Rating: 6/10

Ultimate Burger Steak from Jollibee (PHP 119 with drink)

Mikka says: “Ultimate comfort food. Burger steak, french fries, and a fast-food egg smothered with gravy and sprinkled with garlic bits. I do hope they’d offer it with garlic rice soon.”

Rating: 8.5/10

Roppongi Hills from Umami Haambagu House (PHP 420)

Nico says: “The burgers are always nice, big and juicy. The truffle cream sauce wasn’t overpowering at all. It was all creamy, mushroom-y goodness that brought out the flavor of the meat. And they put so much of it on your plate that you can mop it all off with the fries, too.”

Rating: 8/10

Peras al Vino Malbec aka Poached Pear in Red Wine on Panna Cotta with Granola from Gaucho, Robinsons Magnolia (PHP 190)

Pam says: “Sweet dreams are made of this. Sweet dream or beautiful nightmare? Easily one of my top 10 panna cottas in my life. Whoever thought of this has my heart.”

Rating: 10/10
