Ogle at this Fatty Belly in Today’s Pepper Eats

November 5, 2018

Pepper Eats is our weekly photo-journal featuring what we ate.

Open-Faced Black Angus Sandwich from Almon Marina (PHP 215)

Addi says: “It’s a decent meal. Love Almon Marina 5ever.”

Diner’s rating: 8/10

Slow Roasted Beef Belly with Au Jus Gravy from Relish (PHP 495)

Adee says: “I ate every last morsel with no shame whatsoever. The fat in this is just heavenly. I thought about licking the plate clean, but Dingdong Dantes was at the other table, so no.”

Diner’s rating: 9.5/10

Legally Blonde from Marciano’s (PHP 298)

Diana says: “This creamy tomato pasta dish is supposedly a bestseller. Either my palate isn’t sophisticated enough to recognize the hardly subtle taste of anchovies and gorgonzola or the flavors just didn’t register.”

Diner’s rating: 6/10

Hand Cut Charred Corned Beef from ‘Cue (PHP 685)

Dwight's Handcut Sliced Corned Beef

Dwight says: “I was expecting this to be nitrate-salty and smoky judging from how it was described, but it was leaning towards almost tocino-like sugary. On top of that, corned beef isn’t supposed to be fork-tender, but this was more rubbery than usual. Fortunately, it was grilled well so the barbecue flavor stuck, plus the chimichurri on the side added some depth to an otherwise one-dimensional dish.

Diner’s rating: 7/10

Ajitama Tonkotsu Ramen from Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen (PHP 380)

Mikka says: “This is my second time to eat at Ikkoryu, ordering the same bowl of ramen. The first time I tasted the broth, it was foul and crappy. This second attempt made up for that experience by a huge mile. Flavorful and fatty.”

Diner’s rating: 8/10

Pukipuki (Rellenong Talong) from Bhoyings (PHP 68)

Giselle says: “It’s smoky, it’s simple, and it’s just plain satisfying, especially with a steaming cup of garlic rice.”
Diner’s rating: 9/10

Picadillo Burrito from Chihuahua Mexican Grill (PHP 295)

Kat says: “Too much rice, not enough flavor.”

Diner’s rating: 5/10

Beef Brisket and Tendon Noodle Soup from Gloria Maris (PHP 160)

Lars says: “It’s the Jackie Chan of noodle soups: warm, enjoyable, familiar, unpretentious, and Chinese.”

Diner’s rating: 8/10

Cauliflower Clam Chowder from Grace Park (PHP 225)

Mye says: “I know Grace Park prides itself for being organic and natural, but I’d mistake this for a Knorr soup had this been served at a buffet.  The clam taste was barely noticeable.”

Diner’s rating: 4/10

Aegean Salad from Marcia Adams (PHP 325 à la carte, or +PHP 75 to their three course meal price)

Nico says: “The salad was very filling. There was balance and nice contrast coming from the grilled pear and cheese. The dressing was nice and light, but maybe just a bit too sweet. It’s a definite steal when you have it as a starter for their three course meal.”

Diner’s rating: 8.5/10

Kimchi Fried Rice from Wildflour Cafe + Bakery (PHP 495)

Serna says: “I’m not a big fan of kimchi and it was a little overpowering in this dish, but it all came together beautifully. The steak was really tender, and the poached egg cut through the pungent spiciness of the rice.”

Diner’s rating: 9/10
