NoKal Offers Simply Good Old-Fashioned Diner Fare That Manila Has Been Missing

January 16, 2019

Yes, American-style diners have existed in the Philippines for decades, with many of us having grown up dining at establishments like A&W Restaurant (root beers and cream sodas, anyone?) and Filling Station (iconic for its kitschy interiors). But beyond the nostalgic interiors that take inspiration from American diners, NoKal brings back the feel together with the taste of a locally run dining spot—just like how diners are meant to be.

No frills.

The NoKal cheeseburger is our go-to for something filling and satisfying, especially after a night out of drinking in Poblacion. It holds 160 grams of USDA beef, grilled for a dark and slightly crisp exterior, and doubled up in a 2-stack sandwich. It is as heavy as it sounds, and is priced just under PHP300, for a decent meal that will tide you over past breakfast the next day.

An American-style diner that serves burgers, fries, and shakes.

Bea Osmeña SEE AUTHOR Bea Osmeña

Bea Osmeña is a healthy-ish eater who is just as likely to take you to a vegan joint as she is to consume a whole cheese pie to herself. A former picky eater, Bea has discovered the joys of savory fruit dishes, but still refuses to accept pineapples on her pizza. On the rare occasion you catch her without food in her mouth, you are likely to find her looking at books she can't afford, hugging trees, or talking to strange animals on the street.
