These Kapitolyo Restaurants Aren’t On Your Usual Food Map

Kapitolyo is home to a growing local food scene, with popular restaurants such as Mad Mark’s and Café Juanita, and hole-in-the-wall restaurants like Silantro and Three Sisters providing all kinds of options for its nearby residents. But since this area is still new, there have been several restaurants that have opened in the last year and have yet to garner the same attention as the more well-known eateries. In this list, we round up some of the recently opened restaurants and a few places that locals think deserve a little more attention.

1. Hiyas

Filipino food is no longer limited to the home. Hiyas strives to serve an even better experience of everyone’s go-to comfort food with dishes such as deboned adidas cooked in mushrooms, butter-crumbed mussels, and beef belly kare kare. You can expect Filipino favorites and staples to have a different twist here, with items like the chicken inasal served with sautéed eggplant and atchara.

2. Calderon

Calderon recently expanded to its second branch in Kapitolyo, and is now serving Spanish cuisine to Pasig residents. Their tapas include croquettas and chori-gambas, and large groups can enjoy their various sizes of Paella Negra, Paella Valenciana, and Paella con Setas. Some of their recommended dishes are the Pollo Iberico, a tender 24-hour marinated baked chicken, and the Cangrejos de Calderon or baked crab.

3. Kainan Au Gusto

Located in Café Juanita’s old building, Kainan Au Gusto serves more affordable alternatives to the mid- to high-priced range food in Kapitolyo. Food is served turo-turo style and the menu includes staples such as pork menudo, inihaw na liempo, beef caldereta, and other home-style cooking favorites.

4. Gostoso Piri Piri Chicken

Gostoso Piri Piri is among the latest additions to Kapitolyo’s food strip, which serves Portuguese-style marinated chicken in half, quarter, and whole sizes. Half and quarter orders come with side dishes that include creamed corn, creamed spinach, pasta salad, potato gratin, and olive rice among the options. The Gostoso Platter gives more options to those who can’t decide, letting diners have an entire chicken with 2 sides and 2 olive rice orders, or half an order of chicken with shrimp or the surf and turf. Large groups can try everything in the half chicken, pork slab, and shrimp skewer order that comes with three sides and three olive rice orders.

5. Tomahawk Chops & Grill

Another newcomer that residents have already included in their recommendations is Tomahawk Chops Grill. Go here for the pork loin chops that come with a complete meal of carrots, corn, and rice. The signature sauce is responsible for making each bite memorable and what keeps people coming back for more. If you’re not up for pork, their main meals also offer Grilled Rosemary Chicken and Country Fried Chicken.

6. Open Kitchen

Open Kitchen is Kapitolyo’s not-so-hidden secret. This restaurant serves various flavorful dishes such as Anise Pork Belly and Tuna Tartare among its starters, a “48” Bowl of Happiness that’s made of braised beef shanks, and seafood dishes such as Seared Yellowfin Tuna and Pan Roasted Mahi. This place is known for their plating, too, so that your eyes end up eating before your mouth does.

7. Red Panda

Red Panda stands out among the rest of Kapitolyo’s restaurants for its French-Chinese fusion cuisine. It seems like an odd combination at first, but their variety of dishes lets you taste how well it can work. Some of their main courses include Chinese Style Ossobucco, Sousvide Beef Short Ribs in Chinese Barbeque Sauce, and Truffled Roast Duck Stuffed Ravioli.

8. Pomodoro Pizza

Located in the more residential side of Kapitolyo, Pomodoro Pizza is another newcomer that appears like an actual hole-in-the-wall. This humble-looking restaurant serves several pasta options such as the Basic Pomodoro Pizza, Bataan Tinapa Pasta, Aglio Olio with Shrimp, and even Aligue Pasta. Large groups can have their pastas with the crunch of their handmade thin crust pizzas, which include Chicken and Olives, Margherita, Cheese & Garlic, Tinala & Garlic, and Meat lovers among its items. Barkadas will embrace the affordable price range of PHP 100 for the pastas to PHP 230 for the pizzas.
