Jollibee’s Next Battle: Cameo Considered in Tekken 7?

June 19, 2019

Some interesting tweets were seen on Tekken game director and chief producer, Katsuhiro Harada’s feed last May 29, where he responded to a Filipino fan’s query on adding more Filipino characters with “Jollibeeeee!!! I’ll consider it.”

In another tweet, to a Filipino fan who promises to treat him to Jollibee, he replies again with an even more enthusiastic, “Jollibbeeeeeee!” Clearly, this is a man who might like his chickenjoy, peach mango pie, or even spaghetti with hotdogs. Could he have gotten his Jollibee bug from his 2008 visit in the Philippines?

Fans are now speculating if Jollibee, the much-loved Filipino fastfood, will be making a cameo in the upcoming installment of the fighting game series. Excitement from local game fans caught the attention of local mainstream media outlets such as the Inquirer and ABS-CBN. But the media blitz be overblown. In response to the media attention, Harada has tweeted in Japanese in response to fan inquiries and links to the articles, “First a major TV station, now a newspaper, this is a bit awkward.”

The staff thinks it would make an interesting battleground though,

If the Filipino pride crowd gets its way, It won’t be the first time the Philippines will be a part of the popular fighting game. According to the report by Philippine tech site, Yugatech, a stage in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 called Coastline Sunset is set somewhere in Manila with logos of Timezone and local arcade game franchise, Quantum.

2014 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Tekken game franchise. An official game release date has yet to be announced, but Harada has expressed hope that it would finally come out sometime this year.

Do you want Jollibee in Tekken 7? How would the Jollibee mascot fare against Kuma in the King of the Iron Fist Tournament? Tell us about in the comments!

All this hype thanks to those people who keep dipping in the sauce of Pinoy Prayd Chicken.

At best, Jollibee can make a cameo in the background. Wasting a character slot for that bee is not worth it; Bob already has a bee on his shirt sleeve. That character slot could better be used for an original character with a Filipino nationality or one who uses FMA instead.

And if I may, as it’s one of my tweets that got re-tweeted by Harada-san (whose re-tweet in turn was misquoted by bandwagoners), here’s my take on this whole shindig.

Hi Alvin, thanks for weighing in on the issue. And thanks for crediting us in your use of the photo. 🙂

I was surprised at how blown up the story had become over one tweet. I admit to feeling mighty embarrassed when I got the translation for Harada’s tweet in response to the news. I can only imagine how you must have felt when your tweet got misconstrued!

I read your take on it. I will definitely share it over the twitter world and my personal social network profile.
