If You Need a Salad for Holiday Dinner, Make This Hack for Italianni’s Sicilian Insalata

If you’ve ever eaten in Italianni’s, you’ve probably noticed that every table has their signature Sicilian salad on the table. It’s become a favorite of many—just like one of our readers who asked us to hack it. (That’s right, we make wishes come true. It’s Christmas, after all.) Unlike typical Sicilian-style salads, Italianni’s’ version swaps out oranges for mangoes and grapes; and uses mayonnaise for the dressing (instead of olive oil). It also has anchovies for added umami flavor.

Our recipe adds chicken into the mix for some protein. Don’t worry, it’s not really extra work. You can even opt to leave it out, or use pre-cooked rotisserie chicken. Double (or triple) the recipe, and you’ve got yourself your potluck contribution.

Italianni’s Sicilian Salad with Chicken

  • Serves: 2-4 people

  • 4 anchovy fillets, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced into a paste
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste


  • 1 cup chicken, cooked and diced
  • 2 heads romaine lettuce, chopped into 1-inch pieces (about 6 cups)
  • ½ cup mangoes, diced
  • ½ cup red grapes, halved
  • ¼ cup walnuts, chopped
  • ¼ cup tomatoes, diced
  • ½ cup croutons
  • Black pepper, for serving


  1. For the dressing, whisk together anchovy fillets, garlic, mayonnaise, and olive oil in a large bowl.
  2. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  3. Add chicken into the bowl and toss to coat.
  4. Add all the remaining ingredients except the croutons, and toss until well coated.
  5. Serve the salad on a large platter and top with the croutons and ground black pepper.​
