KFC Revamps the Double Down Dog (Partly Because It Was Our Fault)

January 21, 2020

Last November, KFC came out with the Double Down Dog, which was essentially a hotdog sandwiched in between a chicken fillet then smothered with cheese and mayo, and we thought it was a pretty ballsy crossbreed of a Double Down and a hotdog sandwich. We were told a few weeks back this was only a pilot version of the product, a salty dish that we felt needed a lot of improvement. Being loyal fans of Colonel Sanders’ chicken, it didn’t stop us from enjoying their other new offerings though, such as the Food Trip Rice Bowls and Gangnam-style chicken, which we often crave for and dream about especially when we couldn’t decide what to have for lunch during our team meetings.

This month, KFC recently launched a newer and improved version of the Double Down Dog. The fine folks at KFC asked if we could come over and help out in the R&D stages to come up with a better-tasting and more satisfying version of the all-meat sandwich.

While the sound of hotdog wrapped in fried chicken might sound off-putting to some, we think you should give it a second chance and not let the idea of the Double Down Dog throw you off because it is definitely something worth coming back for. Keeping the original recipe chicken fillet bun, the new Double Down Dog now makes use of a Tender Juicy cheese-filled chicken hotdog, which is a whole lot tastier.

For the sauce, a tangy honey-mustard dressing, which is an upgrade from the mayo, proves to be a more fitting dressing for the savory chicken and hotdog.Though we’d still vouch for rice for any form of a Double Down, the Double Down Dog meal comes with a serving of coleslaw to balance out the entire meal, and a drink to wash it all down. In fact, we’re craving for some Double Down Dogs right now. Thanks for having us help out, KFC! That was a pretty cool and fun experience.

Have you tried the new KFC Double Down Dog? Grab one before it’s too late and tell us your thoughts with a comment below!

Wow… A complete turn around… 😀 Good thing they take in consumer feedbacks & improved their product… I mean the Double Down Dog aka Triple D is hyped because of The Double Down Burger (Which was good IMO)…

No hate for the product. I mean, it is delicious and enough to be considered a quick lunch, sans rice! I just had one last Monday on my way to my interview and it kept me at bay until about 4PM. Totally satisfying.

change to “which we often crave..” no need for ‘for’. C’mon.

Hahaha! I knew it!!! Sadly I wasn’t one of the first few 100 who got in line and tasted the Double Down Dog when they first launched it. But when they finally relaunched it, I was so excited to try but with the thoughts of your initial review on my head. So i ordered with additional rice as per your suggestion. When i took a bite, my first thoughts were… “okay it’s not THAT salty and I can actually eat it without rice. Plus, the dressing is actually kinda nice”. It bothered me at first how it wasn’t how you mentioned it to be but then an idea popped in my head “could it be? could Pepper’s review be behind this improvement?”. And voila! My instincts are correct. Haha! Congrats and thank you for helping KFC, Pepper!

Hope kfc would consider mashed potato instead of coleslaw.

Partly your fault? Nah! Don’t praise yourself. I already tried doubledog on two separate occasion after this article and neither of them have cheese-filled hotdog!
