It’s our birthday! To celebrate, we’ve rounded up the team’s favorite childhood birthday food, and updated them to 2020; and we’re sharing them to you throughout the month.
Did you really attend a children’s birthday party if there was no lumpia? The answer is no; since virtually every Filipino child loves the meat-filled, deep-fried spring rolls. (This is a generalization; but bear with us, there’s a point that needs to be made.) What’s not to love? Meat, good. Wrapper, amazing. Sauce, the bomb. So of course someone from the team—our editor-in-chief, Meya—inevitably called it their choice childhood birthday food.
And since nowadays, one of Meya’s all-time favorites is kebabs, we’ve developed this doner lumpia recipe for her. And we gotta admit, it’s ingenious. The meat has all the spice-y flavor bombs you typically get from the seasoned meat in doners. Then that’s enveloped in the crunchy, deep-fried wrapper of the usual lumpias. We’ve even put in a garlic yogurt sauce to tie it all together.
The key to getting this recipe right lies in the texture of the doner meat. It has to be pretty homogenous, so you’ve got to really work the ground meat until it’s almost like a paste. You can even place it in a food processor!
