Can You Guess which Café Uses this Font?

July 29, 2018

When it comes to branding, a lot of visual elements come into play. It’s essential that everything should bring out the brand’s character otherwise it’ll be a total flop.

One Thursday afternoon, Dwight and I were hanging around Bonifacio High Street and we wanted to grab a cup of coffee. Upon entering this newly renovated café and falling in line, my eyes started to dance around the place. Cool new lighting fixtures, great seating layout, nice wall installations, and then to my shock, this huge black wall scribbled with Comic Sans.

While we hold no grudge against Comic Sans (but we definitely refuse to use it), there is an actual website that reeks of hatred for this pitiful childlike font. Behold, this newly renovated café is none other than…

We’re not completely sure if this is just a temporary wall, or if they have actual plans of making it stay for good. Knowing Starbucks and their various advocacies, we were also thinking that maybe this is some marketing ploy that has a cause-related purpose behind it. But from the looks of it, this wall is bound to stay a while.

What do you think?

  1. I hate Comic Sans with a passion, but to be honest, it doesn’t look as abhorrent here as I thought it would. Still, there are a hundred fonts they could have used in this case.

  2. Crazy! Renovated but came up with comic sans, hahaha…Sorry to comic sans, but its an irritating typeface. So does it mean that Starbucks PH don’t follow the “look” of Starbucks worldwide? Because a lot of Starbucks in SG have recently renovated and they don’t use comic sans…

Hopefully this is a temporary wall, because aside from the comic sans thing, it looks cheap as well 🙁

Agreed. It totally brought down the credibility of the brand. 🙁 Not to mention, it looks hastily done and not well thought of.

      • It seems that I commented too fast. I visited some of the newer Starbucks here in SG, and indeed, they are using comic sans! The horror! The menu board is of different typeface, but the coffee grinds/tea instructions are done in comic sans 🙁

  3. Every time I see Comic Sans, I automatically half-expect a typo.

  4. The next worry is if they start renovating ALL other branches and add Comic Sans to those walls too. :((

They did get you to write about it.

  6. maybe the person who made this got so frustrated with the project he decided to troll instead haha

I just saw this post 🙂 When I went in I was shocked to see the font as well. But then, my creative director friend pointed in out that it wasn’t Comic Sans. He said it was some School Type font (which is similar to Comic Sans). Check out the “q” of Comic Sans and the “q” used on the word opaque on the board. It’s different 😉
