3 Filipino Bars Make It to Asia’s 50 Best This 2019

It’s that one evening every year when the who’s who of the Asian cocktail scene come together to an evening of celebration, exhilaration, and even a bit of debauchery—the Asia’s 50 Best Bars awarding ceremony that happened yesterday at Singapore’s iconic and historical Capitol Theatre.

Before the awarding ceremony came to play, a Drinks Reception was hosted by the event’s several sponsors. Big industry brands such as Perrier, Four Pillars Gin, Cointreau, Ketel One Vodka, and Nikka Whiskey came with their own booths where various libations were crafted for the guests.

In terms of more familiar brands, a Four Pillars Gin’s “Night Moves”, a mix of rare dry gin, peach bianco, and distilled white chocolate and Nikka Whisky’s “Banana C.G.”, made with Nikka Coffey Grain and a banana coconut infusion, maple syrup, banana chips, and lemon zest were some of the crowd pleasers. Other standouts from the evening were newcomer Seedlip, the world’s first distilled non-alcoholic spirit, as well as Mr. Black Coffee Liqueur, which is an original cold-brew coffee liqueur from Australia, taking craft coffee into the night. Made of top-grade Arabica coffees and Australian wheat vodka. The “Noir Cha” cocktail, which was created by Karl Too of Kuala Lumpur’s Omakase + Appreciate) was delicious and held a refreshing balance of slightly bitter botanicals and citruses served highball style made with Mr. Black Amaro, Genmaicha Tea, nutmeg syrup, citric solution, soda, and sour plum.

Onto the awards! Host of the night Anita Kapoor was radiant and beaming on stage as she announced Asia’s 50 Best Bars. Out of the 50, three from the Philippines took part in the list starting with #50, a new entry from Shangri-La Fort’s The Back Room. David Ong bagged two spots with Oto, a newcomer at #47, and of course, at #37, The Curator—also winning the best bar in the Philippines Award, an accolade shared with his partner Jericson Co.

The award for Best Bar in Asia this 2019 went to Hong Kong’s The Old Man, followed by last year’s winner, Manhattan Singapore. Manhattan Singapore was Asia’s #1 Bar for two years (2017 and 2018) and is also the evening’s recipient of the Legend of the List award.
