Another restaurant that just opened at the start of 2017, La Chinesca is owned by chef Bruce Ricketts of Sensei Sushi fame in the very hood where he made his name: BF Homes. Yes, for those without a coveted BF sticker, it can be an utter pain to get to. Yet diners are more than willing to make the trek for the humble Mexican eatery, where Ricketts showcases his interpretations of the said cuisine (“the way a Mexican chef would cook if he were in the Philippines,” he explains).
Ricketts, who grew up eating tacos in California, insists that their tortillas are made fresh every single day. The focus of La Chinesca is less on innovation, and more on creativity through tradition, simplifying flavors down to the essentials and bringing their elements out. To get a sense of his approach, we’d suggest trying the Crab and Lobster Tostada, Camaroncito Taco, or Lamb Barbacoa, but really, anything with one of those fresh tortillas is a good choice.
