Cheesy Bacon Oatmeal: How to Convert Oatmeal Haters

If we had a hierarchy of morning carbohydrates in the Philippines, placed at a lofty position at the very top would be garlic rice; and sitting at the very miserable bottom would be oatmeal.

Of course, with cheese and bacon, it’s a completely different story.

For people who cringe at the idea of oatmeal, deceive yourself by thinking of this as a healthy alternative to your favorite mac and cheese.

Quaker Oat's Cheesy Oatmeal with Bacon
makes 2-3 servings

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup Oatmeal
  • 2 cups Water
  • 3-4 tbsp Cheese spread (Cheese Whiz)
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • pinch of Salt
  • 4 strips Cooked bacon, chopped
  • Chopped parsley, for garnish
  1. Boil together oatmeal, water and cheese while whisking constantly.
  2. Season with sugar and salt.
  3. Turn off fire and mix in bacon.
  4. Pour into bowls and top with more bacon and chopped parsley.

Ah ha, nice! I hate oatmeal, my husband used to make me buy some so he could add it to his daily regimen, but then finally gave up on it (I can imagine why), haha! This might help speed up the consumption of the untouched oatmeal stocks in the pantry. Though I doubt this is anywhere near as “healthy” as what oatmeal is originally intended for. I don’t care though, cheese and bacon? Then I’m all for it! ;p

Hi Guia! Oh I really hope it can help in your oatmeal consumption. cheese and bacon will definitely make oatmeal bearable, even taste good. :)

There *are* people that love oatmeal and I am one of them :) And make that LOVE in all caps! I have lots of oatmeal recipes on my blog if you need inspiration to have it more often…even a couple of savory ones like this (one with extra virgin olive oil, salt, and Parmesan and the other with muscovado-glazed bacon) :) One of my favorite simple ways of having it though is to stir a spoonful of peanut butter into a warm bowl of oatmeal…and add guava jelly or honey to sweeten :)

Hi Joey! thanks for sharing your oatmeal dishes. :) will surely develop recipes around those ingredients.

Sounds good. Kind of reminiscent to grits and cheese. I would eat oatmeal every now and then because of its nagging presence here in the US. But I will forever be an eternal lover of sinangag and tuyo. And I wouldn’t mind having that for lunch and dinner either.

PS. I’m not sure if turkey bacon is available in the Philippines but that is also a good alternative to those who are perpetually in Bora body mode.

hahaha! Oh turkey bacon sounds good, but sadly we don’t even have turkey meat in most of our groceries here! I’m sure a lot of Filipinos living abroad miss those classic native dishes like sinangag and tuyo. Don’t you have Filipino specialty shops there though?:)

They have turkey bacon at S&R! :)

        • http://twitter.com/mylenechung Mylene Chung

Really?! We shall have a turkey bacon feast then!!:D haha! Kat our chef and food stylist buys a lot of our ingredients from there, probably because that’s where you get the hard-to-find and freshest looking ones! Thanks for the tip!

Also try the turkey sausage there.. Love your blog and food photos! Btw, my fave way to eat oatmeal is with Fish Ma-Hu hehe :)

          • http://twitter.com/mylenechung Mylene Chung

OOh awesome! I usually have ma-hu with congee, never thought about mixing it with oatmeal though! Will try that! Thanks for the kind words!:D

I always eat oatmeal with nutella (kind of defeats the purpose) when I crave for champorado. But I might just try this savory counterpart! Thanks!
