Go Nuts over Made by Maxi’s Homemade Cashew and Almond Nut Butters

Maxine Qua first started experimenting with nut butters when she got into working out. Searching for a “clean source of protein,” she discovered nut butters and soon found that her desire took a heavy hit on her wallet. “So I started to experiment at home, make my own flavors, and the best part was I got to control what was in it!” She soon discovered that she wasn’t the only one who enjoyed her healthy and homemade go-to snack, and started selling her concoction at bazaars in December 2013.

“My first priority is always health and quality of ingredients,” Qua proclaims. “I have this silly motto in my head: ‘Quality forever. Compromise, never.’ So for my cinnamon-vanilla flavor, it’s really easy to just resort to powdered vanilla with sugars in it, but I made sure to source mine from the real vanilla bean. For the cacao flavor, I use the cacao nibs and not cocoa powder because I believe that cacao nibs delivers the most health benefits and it delivers the best cacao flavor.” Not only does this dedication to only premium ingredients make the products better for your health (“guiltless,” as Qua likes to call it), but also improves the taste.

Qua wanted to offer a low-glycemic treat so that customers can enjoy her product “without having to think about it too much,” so she sweetens Made by Maxi’s nut butter only with organic coconut sugar.

The quality of Made by Maxi’s nut butters is evident in the robust all-natural flavors and the gritty-homemade texture. The snack borders on indulgent with the carefully crafted flavors that Qua painstakingly formulated. The Extra Dark Cacao Almond Butter stands out for its depth, while its Crunchy Cacao Cashew Butter alternative has a more easy-going and sweet taste. Cinnamon Vanilla Almond Butter is accessible and comparable to a fancy choc-nut butter, while Vanilla Chai Cashew Butter is perky and fun. “I’ve always dreamed of having a business that has a positive impact on people’s lives, that will actually make a difference,” Qua tells us. A people person, Qua loves meeting her customers and hearing their own health stories, which inspires her to keep making her product and affirms her philosophy to stay true to her uncompromising approach to ingredients. “And I know it’s a small difference—it’s not like Peace Corps.-level difference—but I think it’s very rewarding to be able to help people in making a positive change in their diet in some way.”

Qua reminds you to stir your nut butters, as oil separation is a natural occurrence with homemade nut butters.

Spread it on toast or eat it on a banana. Add a scoop to your overnight oats, or blend it into your protein shake. We’d even recommend enjoying it plain and off the spoon—just like how Qua prefers it best.
