Dean & DeLuca to Open in Manila

May 15, 2014

With foreign chains and products almost endlessly pouring into Manila, it’s only inevitable that a stalwart gourmet and specialty food retailer would come in and give our high-end grocers and purveyors a run for their money. Dean & DeLuca, New York’s famed institution, will be opening its doors in Manila later this year, with an expected launch date in August at Rockwell Edades, with another branch soon to follow in Bonifacio Global City, behind The Globe Tower.

Dean and DeLuca Interiors Around the World

First founded in SoHo, New York City in 1977, Dean & DeLuca has expanded to four other stores in New York, and more stores across the U.S. Their international branches include Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the Middle East, and Japan.

Dean & DeLuca is the brainchild of Giorgio DeLuca, a schoolteacher later turned cheese merchant, and publishing business manager Joel Dean. According to their website, Dean & DeLuca boasts that they were the first to sell balsamic vinegar and sun-dried tomatoes in the U.S., long before they were staples on regular grocery shelves. While established as a culinary hot spot, it is also a popular location for TV shows such as ‘Gossip Girl’, ‘Hannibal’, and ‘Felicity’.

The game is on for the specialty food and retail grocery scene in Manila once Dean & DeLuca opens its doors here. Several local groceries and specialty food stores have started patterning their look after establishments abroad, with the feel of an indoor faarmer’s market, and even serving hot food in a cafe. Expect a new perspective on food, as they bring to Manila their reputation of being a culinary trendsetter.

What do you think about specialty food and retail grocery stores coming in and popping up all over Metro Manila? How do you feel supermarket chains should respond to this trend? Sound off in the comments section below!
